Beyond Language: Guidance on Chinese Business Etiquette

Negotiating with Chinese partners is not just a linguistic matter: understanding Chinese business etiquette is crucial to building trust and successfully closing deals.

During meetings, in addition to providing accurate interpretation, I offer guidance on Chinese cultural dynamics and corporate protocols, helping my clients avoid missteps that could compromise negotiations.

Some key aspects of Chinese business etiquette include:

  • Exchanging business cards: In China, business cards are presented with both hands and should be carefully examined before being put away, as a sign of respect.

  • Hierarchy in meetings: Respect for hierarchy is essential during meetings. It is important to address the most senior person first.

  • The value of guanxi (关系): Personal relationships play a fundamental role in Chinese business culture. Building trust can be more important than price or contractual terms.

  • Toasting at business dinners: During formal banquets, toasting is an important ritual. Slightly lowering your glass below that of your counterpart is a sign of respect.

  • The use of silence in negotiations: In Chinese culture, moments of silence are often strategic. Avoiding the urge to fill pauses can strengthen your negotiating position.
